What's the Issue?
Owning a Jaguar or Land Rover should mean performance you can trust. But many diesel drivers may have been sold vehicles that passed lab tests while producing higher emissions in everyday driving.
The claim alleges that some JLR diesel vehicles were fitted with software or calibration strategies designed to reduce emissions during testing, but not consistently in real-world conditions.
That matters because buyers were entitled to vehicles that complied with emissions rules as marketed, not just on a test bench.
Signs Your Vehicle May Be Affected
Unlike a mechanical fault, cheat-device issues often don't show obvious symptoms. Many drivers notice nothing at all.
- Reduced fuel economy over time
- EGR/DPF warnings or repeated regenerations
- Reduced performance during certain driving conditions
- Software updates linked to emissions
- Concerns about resale value or compliance
Important: You do not need a warning light or breakdown to claim. The issue is about misrepresentation and loss of value.
Why Are Diesel Emissions a Problem?
Diesel emissions systems are meant to cut harmful pollution. But if defeat devices are proven, affected JLR diesels may have:
Overpaid vehicle price
Vehicles can be worth less than what owners paid if emissions performance was misrepresented.
Hidden environmental impact
Higher real-world NOx emissions contribute to air-quality harm beyond what was advertised.
Financial loss on resale
Emissions scandals typically cause extra depreciation and reduce buyer confidence.
It's not just about pollution. It's about being sold a vehicle on the basis of claims that may not have matched reality.
VOLKSWAGEN and its subsidiaries Audi, Seat and Skoda used "cheat devices".
Almost 1.2 million vehicles in the UK were affected. Over 90,000 drivers in England and Wales after a high court claim was settled received compensation from a total reward of £193m.
The "dieselgate" scandal as it became known erupted back in 2015, ten years on and the second chapter is now being written.
A major lawsuit against carmakers has opened in the high court in London. On Monday October 13th the trial began against 5 car makers according to the BBC News the KC for the car owners, said that "each player in the industry basically took a conscious decision that customer convenience, which helped the industry sell more cars, was more important" than preventing pollution. A judgement on this case is not expected until summer 2026.

How Much Could You Claim?
Compensation depends on factors like purchase price, how long you owned or leased the vehicle, and the level of depreciation caused by the emissions issue.
Most claims seek damages for:
- Overpayment at point of sale/lease
- Loss of value when selling or returning the vehicle
- Associated financial impact of misrepresentation
Typical UK diesel emissions claims often run into thousands of pounds per vehicle. Final amounts are decided at settlement or by the court.
